3003 VAN NESS

3003 Van Ness Street NW is a large apartment building in the Van Ness neighborhood of Washington, DC. It is a rent-stabilized property — the rent cannot increase more than a certain percentage per year. The building is managed by Equity Residential and is home to a diverse community of long-term residents, students, families, and professionals.

The building is known for its spacious apartments, hardwood floors, excellent location near the Metro and Rock Creek Park, and amenities such as a large outdoor swimming pool. Many people move here because of the size of the units and the convenience of the neighborhood.

3003 Van Ness Street NW is part of a much larger residential project developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, during a period of rapid growth and modernization in Washington’s Forest Hills and Van Ness neighborhoods. When 3003 Van Ness opened, it was part of the ambitious Van Ness Centre complex—an early mixed-use development that included the city’s first indoor mall, apartments, offices, and other amenities. The project was designed to create a self-contained urban community around the then-new Van Ness Metro station.

The architect/developer teams of the era favored long, multi-wing concrete structures, large floor plans, and mid-century modern design principles — many of which are still visible today. When the three large buildings in the Van Ness complex were constructed, they were very desirable, luxury buildings.

Van Ness North is now a coop; Van Ness East is a condominium; and Van Ness South, now known as 3003 Van Ness, remains an apartment building.

While 3003 Van Ness has suffered from many serious problems in recent years, at the core it remains a gorgeous property with enormous potential, and in some ways, a great place to live.
